Indications

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

Tenormin is a prescription medicine that belongs to a group of medicines called “beta blockers.” Tenormin is used, alone or in combination with other medicines, to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Angina Pectoris (Chest Pain) Due to Coronary Atherosclerosis

Tenormin is used for the long-term management of patients with chest pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart.

Acute Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack)

Tenormin is used to reduce the risk of death in patients that have had or are suspected to have had a heart attack and otherwise have no sign of difficulty with blood circulation. Certain patients were excluded from trials of atenolol and some groups of patients, including older patients, were less likely to benefit.

Important Safety Information

Do not take Tenormin if you have a slow heartbeat (sinus bradycardia), if you have heart block greater than first degree, problems with blood circulation because of heart issues (cardiogenic shock), heart failure (overt cardiac failure), or you are allergic to any ingredient in Tenormin.

Tenormin may cause more severe heart failure in patients with congestive heart failure and can otherwise lead to heart failure over time. Tenormin should not be used in patients whose heart failure is not effectively controlled with other treatment during a heart attack.

Do not stop taking Tenormin without talking to your doctor. Abruptly discontinuing Tenormin may lead to serious side effects.

Tell your doctor if you have asthma or other lung problems, are scheduled to have major surgery, are diabetic, have thyroid problems, have a condition called phecochromocytoma (rare adrenal gland tumor), are pregnant or breast feeding, are already taking a beta blocker, or have kidney problems. Tenormin may cause serious side effects or otherwise mask certain side effects associated with these conditions.

To avoid a serious or potentially life-threatening condition, tell your doctor about all the drugs you are taking as Tenormin may cause problematic drug interactions.
